Why Should One Use An Exclusive Food Grade Hose?

A food grade hose is used for the bulk transfer of food products through suction or pneumatic systems. These suction and discharge hoses are exclusively manufactured to preserve the quality of food products and prevent contamination from exposure to foreign elements.

Food Grade Hose: Applications

Food grade hoses are extensively employed in food manufacturing units to carry out production in a safe and hygienic environment. The most common wet and dry applications include:

  • Bulk food processing
  • Ground meat
  • Load cell connections
  • Process transfer
  • Pump vibration damping
  • Washdown stations

Typically, they are used to supply beer, wine, water, milk, juice, soft drinks, flour and fish.

Food Grade Hose: Characteristics

To maintain flexibility, food grade hoses are made up of rubber or PVC. However, they have an internal stainless steel wire helical structure to provide strength and durability. A food grade hose differs from a fuel hose or other suction hoses in the following ways:

  • Non-metal hoses: They are made up of PVC or rubber to avoid contamination due to metal corrosion.
  • Chemical resistance: Regular contact with food products, particularly wine, beer and milk, can lead to the development of acids and chemicals in the hose. These acids can affect the quality of food and can even cause food poisoning. Thus, food grade hoses are manufactured from non-toxic compounds to ensure chemical resistance.
  • Odorless: Food grade hoses are odorless and tasteless to preserve the actual taste of the food products.
  • Maintain pressure: Good quality food grade hoses can sustain high pressure supply. Maintaining supply pressure is particularly important in the wine and beer applications.
  • Durable: Food grade hoses are especially manufactured to cater to the demanding conditions at food processing plants. They can withstand rough handling and high temperature situations.

Food grade hoses are used with a range of supporting couplings and fittings. Make sure that the fittings are suitable for food grade supply. Look out for US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) standards before buying food grade hose.

    • Amazon Hose answers:

Thanks for your inquiry. I have a couple different hoses that are good for potable water. One is clear with a braided reinforcement in the wall, similar to what you see on the back of a soda machine. The other one is gray which can help keep sunlight out if the hose is in a location where that’s necessary. Do you have a preference between the two? Also, the ¾” fittings you need, are they male and female garden hose thread?

  • question:

I’m looking for a hose that will attach to my kitchen sink to fill water containers. Do you have anything like this? I’d say 40 ft is the max I’d need.

    • Amazon Hose answers:

Thanks for your inquiry on our website regarding a water hose. We do have hose that you could use for that, but unfortunately we don’t have any fittings that would be the right thread to connect to your kitchen faucet.

You may be able to find an adapter somewhere that would adapt from the faucet thread to standard garden hose thread. If you are able to do that then we can help you no problem!

  • question:

My coffee maker split one of the plastic hoses, and I need a replacement hose. The hose needs to withstand the hot water temperature from the boiler. The size is as follows: 13/32″ ID, and the length needed would be 12″ as I will replace both sections of the tubing. Do you have something for that? And what would the price for this be? By-the-way…the tubing is note reinforced.
Thank you for your help with this.

    Lynn

    • Amazon Hose answers:

Yes, we have silicone tubing that should work perfectly for that. I will email you details and pricing.

  • question:

I am in need of about 2′ of a 1/2″ OD clear tubing that is food safe that will withstand boiling temps for a sight glass for a beer kettle. Any info would be great.

    • Amazon Hose answers:

Unfortunately everything that we carry that is clear is made from PVC and is not rated for that high of a temperature. You will probably need to go with actual glass tubing or maybe a high temperature acrylic to meet those demands.

  • question:

I need between 100ft. and 150ft. of this food grade hose. What would the prices be like?

    • Amazon Hose answers:

Do you know what size hose you need? Also, are you looking for something for pressure or for suction?

  • question:

i am looking for home beer brewing hose. i need 50ft of hose for a project called counterflow chiller. most people make these out of garden hoses. but i want them to be of food grade and also want them to be able to handle near boiling liquid. also, want 5/8″ ID

    • Amazon Hose answers:

I don’t think we have anything in 5/8” to offer you, but would ¾” work? If so we have Goodyear White Flexwing, which is food grade and rated for up to 230 degrees F. Here’s a link to information on this hose on Goodyear’s site: White Flexwing

  • question:

What is the availability and price for 300′ of 5/16″ ID clear tubing to be used to collect maple sap?

    • Amazon Hose answers:

Check your email for a couple of options along with pricing!

      Thanks!

  • question:

I’m looking for a small quantity (ten-15 feet or so of each) of clear, food grade hose in 3/8″ and 1/4″ ID capable of handling up to 24 inches of vacuum pressure for a small farm milking machine. Your website says “An inch or a mile,” yet for some reason I’m having trouble navigating it. I’m not sure if you even sell via the internet. I’d willing buy a bit more, but I’m reluctant to buy fifty feet or more that most sources list as a minimum. Can you help?

    • Amazon Hose answers:

We stock a hose called “Polywire” that sounds like what you’re looking for. It’s a clear, food grade hose with a spiral wire embedded in the wall and is rated for 29.9” hg of vacuum.

I will email you with more detailed information and pricing.

  • question:

I have an automatic coffee maker that had one of the hoses split. The size is 3/8″ ID and 5/8″ OD and of course it would need to be able to handle hot water. Do you have tubing in stock for this purpose and is it available in small quantities?

    • Amazon Hose answers:

Is it a reinforced hose or is it non-reinforced tubing? It sounds like our food grade silicone tubing may be what you are looking for.

  • question:

The sizes are: 1inch and 1.5 inch

    Thank you

    • Amazon Hose answers:

We do not carry the Vintner hose in stock, but we could special order it from Goodyear for you. They offer it in 100 ft lengths and it would take about a week for us to get it in for you.
